Q: What is Security Health Plan?
A: Security Health Plan of Wisconsin, Inc., is a health maintenance organization (HMO) owned and operated by Marshfield Clinic, one of the nation’s largest private group medical practices. Security Health Plan offers a variety of group and individual health coverage options for people of all ages, in all income brackets living in 32 counties in northern, central and western Wisconsin.
Q: What is an HMO?
A: "HMO" is an abbreviation for "health maintenance organization." HMOs operate on managed care principles: We try to keep health care costs down by keeping people healthy through education efforts and by covering health care that prevents people from getting sick (things like mammograms and regular check-ups) and by balancing the cost of claims among many members. Members of HMOs receive their health care from a network of health care providers (doctors, hospitals, and other health services) affiliated with their health plan. Security Health Plan’s network includes more than 4,100 health care providers and 42 hospitals in Wisconsin and over 55,000 pharmacies nationwide.
Q: Is Security Health Plan an HMO?
A: Yes. We have a listing of many physicians, hospitals and other providers who are part of our network. Our network includes providers at Marshfield Clinic and many other clinics and independent providers in our service area. In general, you will only have insurance coverage if you see providers affiliated with Security Health Plan.
Q: What if my current doctor is not on Security Health Plan’s provider list?
A: Security Health Plan tries to become affiliated with as many high quality providers as possible in its service area so that members can have as many options as possible. We frequently add providers to our list. Call our Customer Service Department to see if your doctor or other health care provider has been added. You can encourage your doctor to become affiliated with Security Health Plan. If your doctor is not on our provider list, we can help you choose a new doctor you feel comfortable seeing.
Q: What happens if I am out of your service area on vacation and need to see a doctor?
A: Security Health Plan covers treatment of medical emergencies that occur outside of our service area. If an out-of-area emergency occurs, please call Customer Service to report what happened and where care was sought.
Q: What are the hours for Customer Service?
A: Customer Service is staffed 7:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except Tuesday, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Outside of these hours, members may call the 24-hour Nurse Line for medical information or to leave a message for a Customer Service Representative. If you leave a message, a Customer Service Representative will return your call the next business day.
Q: Do you offer a Medicare supplement, and, if so, how can I apply?
A: Yes. Security Health Plan offers a Medicare supplement policy called Senior Security Medicare Select. To be eligible for Senior Security Medicare Select you must have Medicare Part B and live in the Security Health Plan service area at least 6 months of the year. If your Part B coverage has been in effect for more than 6 months before the date your Senior Security policy would go into effect, you must pass medical underwriting to be eligible for the Senior Security Program. This website has more information on Senior Security Medicare Select.
Q: Do you offer anything for people who are not on Medicare?
A: Yes. Security Health Plan offers Advantage Plus. There are several deductible and coinsurance options to choose from.
Q: How do I apply for your insurance?
A: Call 1-800-472-2363 or send us an e-mail request asking for information on the insurance product you are interested in applying for (Senior Security Medicare Select, Advocare or Advantage Plus) and we will mail you a packet that will include all the application materials, a provider directory, which is a list of providers in our network, a map of our service area, and the premium rate for the policy you requested. If you are an employer or human resources representative for an employer, please request information on group or business products.
Q: Can you take the premium directly out of my bank account?
A: Yes, we can for individuals purchasing policies for themselves and/or families (non-group products). This is a feature many of our members appreciate. Simply complete the Automatic Clearing House (ACH) form included in the information packets and your premium will be automatically deducted from your bank account.
Q: How far in advance should I apply for a policy?
A: We recommend you apply 2 months prior to when you want the coverage to be effective. Never cancel or drop other coverage you have before you receive written confirmation that your application has been accepted and coverage is in effect.
Q: Do you offer prescription drug coverage?
A: All Security Health Plan members can purchase their prescription drugs at a discount through Security Value. We also offer a variety of drug coverage options as a supplement to our group coverage. This Web site has more information on prescription drug coverage. You may also search a list of the drugs covered for most members who have drug coverage.
